Austrian Economists Oppose Property Taxes

President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber Christoph Leitl has backed the tax course set by Austrian Vice Chancellor and People’s Party leader Michael Spindelegger, who is against the re-introduction of property taxes in Austria.

Both of them believe that property, inheritance and gift taxes would hit the country’s middle class and businesses, make the country unattractive for investments. Burdening corporations with new taxes would not help to provide both economic growth and jobs.

Leitl stressed that it is currently much more important to create savings potential through structural reforms and to create targeted incentives to support domestic companies.

Austria’s Vice Chancellor Spindelegger also stated that his party stands for stability and for predictability, this is why a tax reform is not possible this year or next.
